Suhas Nimbalkar was a distinguished Indian modernist artist whose practice was deeply rooted in abstraction, colour and the exploration of space. Born in 1942, he studied Painting at the Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, and later pursued Fine Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Baroda, where he studied under the guidance of N. S. Bendre.

Nimbalkar developed a distinctive abstract visual language in which colour, form and space enter into a subtle dialogue. His compositions often feature carefully balanced areas of colour, geometric and organic forms, and textured surfaces. Rather than depicting a specific subject, his paintings invite viewers to experience the relationships between colours and forms and to discover their own interpretations within the work.

Nature, landscape and memory became important sources within his artistic vocabulary. His encounter with the Himalayas during a journey to Nepal inspired a series of works exploring mountains, which he gradually transformed into abstract compositions of small triangular forms. His practice also incorporated imaginative, fairy-tale-like figures, reflecting his ability to connect personal experiences with abstract visual expression.
