Vilas Shinde
Vilas Shinde is a distinguished Indian contemporary artist known for his abstract paintings and his sophisticated exploration of colour, texture and space. Born in Satara, Maharashtra, in 1953, he completed his Diploma in Drawing and Painting from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1978, followed by a Post Diploma in Painting from M. S. University, Baroda, in 1980. He later studied painting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and printmaking under the renowned printmaker S. W. Hayter.
Shinde’s artistic journey began with printmaking before gradually moving towards painting. This background has strongly influenced his approach to colour and composition. His abstract works are characterised by carefully considered colour relationships, subtle tonal variations and richly textured surfaces. Rather than relying on clearly defined objects, he uses minimal forms and expressive marks to create a sense of movement, depth and atmosphere.
