Thota Vaikuntham
Thota Vaikuntam is one of India’s celebrated modern and contemporary painters, renowned for his vibrant portrayals of Telangana’s rural life, people and cultural traditions. Born in 1942 in Burugupalli, Karimnagar, Telangana, he studied painting at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad, and later pursued Painting and Printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, where he trained under the influential artist K. G. Subramanyan.
Vaikuntam’s artistic vocabulary is deeply rooted in the people and cultural life of Telangana. Rural men and women, particularly the women of Telangana, are recurring subjects in his paintings. His fascination with these figures can be traced to his childhood, when he watched travelling theatre groups in his village and became captivated by male performers portraying female characters. These early experiences later became an important source for his distinctive representations of Telangana women.
