Kinkar Ghosh

Kinkar Ghosh is a distinguished Indian artisan specialising in the traditional craft of mother-of-pearl and seashell work. Based in West Bengal, his practice transforms locally sourced and discarded shells into intricate decorative and functional objects, including jewellery, cutlery, lamps and sculptural vessels.

Ghosh began his journey in the craft in 1989, when he apprenticed with a family friend who introduced him to the techniques of cutting, shaping and finishing shells by hand. After returning to his village, he established his own independent practice and gradually developed a distinctive approach to working with mother-of-pearl. His work is recognised for making use of the natural pearlescent qualities of shells, revealing subtle shades of white, pink and yellow through careful polishing and craftsmanship.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Artworks should be displayed away from direct sunlight and breeze. To clean accumulated dust from a painting, use a soft, dry brush very lightly on the surface.
Make sure there is no moisture on the bristles before touching the artwork. For repairing more severe damage, such as cracks or discolouration, it is best to seek help from a professional. Once a year, remove the artwork from the wall for a couple of days to let the wall breathe and avoid moisture accumulation.
