Valay Shende is a contemporary Indian sculptor and video artist based in Mumbai, whose practice examines the complexities, contradictions and challenges of contemporary urban society. Born in Nagpur in 1980, he received a Diploma in Art Teaching in Nagpur before graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 2004. He later participated in artist residencies in Paris and Scotland.

Shende’s work is deeply influenced by his observations of everyday life and the changing social landscape of India. His sculptures often explore the tensions between modern industrial life and traditional religious and cultural beliefs. Through these contrasts, he reflects on issues such as consumerism, social inequality, vulnerability, power and the struggles of the common person.
