Ramesh Gorjala is a renowned contemporary Indian artist whose practice brings together the rich visual heritage of Kalamkari with a contemporary artistic sensibility. Born in 1979 in Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh, he grew up in a family of weavers and was introduced to the Kalamkari tradition at an early age by his uncle, Balaji Theertham, a National Award-winning Kalamkari artist. He later pursued formal training in painting at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad.

Gorjala’s works are deeply inspired by Indian mythology, particularly stories and figures from the Hindu tradition. His distinctive compositions feature deities such as Krishna, Vishnu, Ganesha and Hanuman, surrounded by intricate drawings, patterns and multiple narrative elements. His paintings often create a sense of “stories within stories,” reflecting the storytelling traditions of Kalamkari while giving them a contemporary visual identity.
