A.A. Almelkar

A. A. Almelkar (1920–1982), born Abdulrahim Appabhai Almelkar, was one of India’s most distinguished modern painters, celebrated for his vibrant depictions of tribal communities, rural life, and indigenous Indian culture. Born in Solapur, Maharashtra, he began painting at an early age and later graduated from the prestigious Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1948. Influenced initially by artists such as Walter Langhammer and N. S. Bendre, Almelkar developed a distinctive visual language inspired by Indian miniature traditions, folk art, and tribal aesthetics.

His works are recognized for their rhythmic lines, stylized figures, expressive eyes, and rich, harmonious colours. During the 1960s and 1970s, he reached the peak of his artistic career, creating paintings that celebrated the beauty, dignity, and cultural richness of India’s tribal and village communities. Almelkar received numerous honours, including awards from the Bombay Art Society, the Art Society of India, and the Lalit Kala Akademi. His artworks continue to be featured in major collections and exhibitions across India.
