Rabin Mondal

Rabin Mondal (1929–2019) was a distinguished Indian modernist painter and a founding member of the influential Calcutta Painters group. Born in Howrah, West Bengal, his artistic vision was deeply shaped by the social and political upheavals of his time, including the Bengal Famine, Partition, and the struggles of urban life.

Known for his powerful expressionist style, Mondal created emotionally charged figurative works that explored themes of human suffering, alienation, power, and social injustice. His iconic series featuring Kings, Queens, and Deities employed distorted forms, bold black contours, and dramatic colour palettes to reflect the complexities of the human condition.

A pioneering force in post-Independence Indian art, Mondal’s work combined elements of expressionism, cubism, and folk influences while maintaining a uniquely personal visual language. His paintings are part of major public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
