Sunil Das was one of India’s most celebrated modern and expressionist painters, renowned for his dynamic depictions of horses, bulls, and the human figure. Born in Kolkata in 1939, he studied at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, and later received a French Government scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Das gained early recognition for his powerful Horse Series, which captured movement, energy, and freedom with remarkable spontaneity. His later Bull Series, inspired by Spanish bullfights, further established his reputation as a master of expressionist imagery. Throughout his career, he continuously experimented with style and subject matter, exploring themes of human relationships, femininity, and social realities.
A recipient of numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 2014, Sunil Das remains a significant figure in post-Independence Indian art. His works are held in major public and private collections in India and abroad.
